The Best At-Home Matcha Recipe

A while ago, I wrote an article detailing the history of matcha and its health benefits. In today’s shorter post, I’ll share my perfected recipe which you can enjoy from the comfort of your own home and which costs you significantly less than buying it in your local coffee shop.

To drink matcha at home, try this recipe:

Ingredients:

  • Water

  • Matcha powder

  • Milk (plant-based or regular, I prefer oat)

  • Maple syrup

  • Ice

Need: Whisk

  1. First, pour (chilled) water into a metal bowl. You can use the glass you intend on filling to measure out the amount of water to ensure you don’t waste any ingredients.

  2. Drop about a tablespoon of your matcha powder into the bowl. The amount I use varies by day but this is a good amount to start.

  3. Using a whisk, combine the matcha and water completely (many companies sell specific matcha whisks, I find these unnecessary if you have a regular one already). If the liquid is too pale in your view, consider adding more powder and stirring once more.

  4. Fill your glass with ice about halfway

  5. Carefully pour the matcha mixture into the glass, stopping about an inch or two from the top.

  6. Fill in the rest of the space in the glass with a dash each of your chosen milk and maple syrup (which blends into the drink much more seamlessly than honey). Adjust based on how sweet or milky you would like it to taste.

  7. Stir well with a straw and enjoy!

To create the drink pictured, simply crush raspberries and add a light sprinkle of sugar. Place this “jam” at the bottom of your glass before adding in the rest of the ingredients.
