About
Ava Andrews's first recollection of ever writing creatively was when she was eight years old and was gifted six blank mini books, complete with felt pens and adorable 3D animal stickers. She nestled into her plush carpet, splayed all her materials around her, and began creating, squeezing her ideas onto those 5x5 pieces of paper. When she finally emerged hours later, she was clutching six stories between her now very colorful fingertips, a gleeful grin enveloping her whole face. She hasn't been able to stop writing ever since.
When she joined her high school's newspaper in 2019, she fell in love with journalism and the exhilaration of reporting on student life around her school. Seeing a gap in what The Grace Gazette provided students with, she started and now continues to run and host her school's weekly podcast. She grew so passionate about the podcast and writing that she created Unsheepish.
Unsheepish is inspired by Ava's family's motto, "Ain't No Sheep." The phrase was coined amidst a suffocatingly crowded ferry when Ava muttered the phrase under her breath. It stuck ever since. Her family openly opposes any activity that involves waiting in claustrophobic, endless lines, or being corralled and herded. They act of their own volition. They lead, not follow. This site delivers everything but sheepish content.
Now in her senior year, she contributes to the Gazette as the Editor-in-Chief after writing for the paper as Culture Editor in her Junior year. Ava has written for sites such as Teen Ink, Visible Magazine, The Junction, and is a writer for and the Editor-in-Chief of Blue Bean Magazine. She continues to pursue her mission of exploring every medium of writing she can get her ever-colorful hands on.
She will be studying English at the UnIversity of California, Berkeley come Fall 2022.
