A Raisin in the Sun by Lorraine Hansberry
"When you start measuring somebody, measure him right, child, measure him right. Make sure you done taken into account what hills and valleys he come through before he got to wherever he is" (145).
A Raisin in the Sun is a play set in the Chicago Southside between World War II and the present following an African-American family through a few particularly eventful days in their lives as they navigate what it means to be black in a racist society. When they receive a check in the mail for ten thousand dollars, the family is torn apart by what the check could mean for each of their futures.
This play is perfect for diving deeper into the racist roots of American history, as well as understanding its impacts from an emotional, heart-wrenching, and necessary perspective.
